Corporate Restructuring: Challenges and Solutions141
Date·Venue
31 May 2017Room 210, Seoul National University Asia Center
Slowed growth in the global economy, changes in the industry structure, and external uncertainties have undermined Korea’s competitiveness in the heavy, export industries. Without a timely restructuring process of less-competitive industries and marginal firms, the Korean economy will run into a vicious cycle of inefficiency in limited resources leading to a further fall in the economy’s productivity and competitiveness. In the wake of the inauguration of the new government, Korea should now speed up its restructuring. However, conventional restructuring led by public financial institutions or commercial banks have bumped into limits, whereas market based tools such as private equity funds and investment banks are not fully functioning.

Korea Capital Market Institute and SNU Institute for Research in Finance and Economics (SIRFE) will cohost a seminar titled “Corporate Restructuring: Challenges and Solutions” via which the participants are expected to seek ways to facilitate market-friendly restructuring. First, the focus will be placed on the role of the government in market-friendly restructuring, and then move on to policy challenges for addressing the limits of today’s corporate restructuring.
