The Korea Derivatives Association and Korea Capital Market Institute will co-host a policy symposium titled Enhancing Competitiveness of Korea’s OTC Derivatives Market, on Friday, September 27, 2019.

Derivatives provide investors a diverse range of risk-hedging tools by linking them with the spot market, while supporting the real economy via indirect investment. However, it’s true that some investors use derivatives for speculation, which affected the negative perception of the market. Furthermore, Korea’s derivatives market is concentrated on only a small number of index products. Also criticized is the market’s lack of help to the real economy due to the continuous decline in trading.

To address these issues, Korea’s Financial Services Commission unveiled its plans to develop Korea’s derivatives market to better support the real economy and innovative growth in May 2019. The plans elaborated on how to secure market demand and demand bases, enhance market autonomy, and bolster market stability and prudence. The recent fiasco over derivatives-linked securities on German bond yields shed light on investment losses in the overall derivatives market as well as the investment protection issue. This policy symposium arrives at a very opportune moment in that it seeks out ways to ensure both prudence and competitiveness in the derivatives product market. We expect all of the participants as well as the panels to share their insights via in-depth discussion that will help share innovative, creative, and realistic alternatives to the current issue. We kindly ask for your support and active participation.

Thank you.
